Earwax Removal

Having earwax is normal and helps protect the inner ear from bacteria and foreign objects. Sometimes ears don’t expel earwax naturally and it can lead to a build-up of excess wax.

Having levels of excessive earwax can cause issues such as earache, ear infections and perforated ear drums. If you feel like there is a build-up of wax, do not try to remove it yourself as this may cause damage to your ear and may make the blockage worse. Instead come into one of our dedicated ear and hearing clinics and have it removed by one of our expert clinics.

What can you expect from your first wax removal appointment?

If you are unsure on what to expect from your first wax removal appointment, we have a step by step guide on what to expect from your appointment.

Types of Wax Removal

In our clinics we offer different types of wax removal procedure. The type of treatment that you will receive will depend on what your wax situation looks like:

  • Microsuction – This method involves insertion of a small tube which gently sucks out the earwax. This is often considered the safest and most comfortable method of ear wax removal.
  • Irrigation – In this method of earwax removal, an electric pump gently flushes warm water into your ear and dislodges the ear wax blockage. Like microsuction, this procedure is painless and comfortable. This method of wax removal is not suitable for individuals with a history of eardrum perforations.
  • Instrumentation – Instrumentation is a method of manual wax removal that involves using small, specialised tools to scoop and lift wax out of the ear canal, this method of wax removal is only used if a patient’s wax is in the outer ear and not deep inside the ear.
