Tinnitus

Often described as a ringing, buzzing, hissing or roaring sound, tinnitus occurs when you hear sounds coming from an internal source as opposed to external one. This means it is a sound only you can hear. There is a range different sounds that are associated with tinnitus, one of the most common sounds is ringing. The sounds can vary with some examples including:

  • Buzzing
  • Humming
  • Grinding
  • Hissing
  • Whistling

There are many different causes of tinnitus ranging from more common causes such as prolonged exposure to loud noises (e.g., concert) and ear infections but can also originate from rarer sources such as head injuries or Ménière's disease.

Managing Tinnitus

Depending on what the source of the tinnitus is, the ways in which it can be managed are all very different. In some cases of tinnitus caused by loud and sudden sounds (e.g. fireworks and loud music) will go away over a short period but for those with more chronic sources (e.g. sensitivities to noise or otosclerosis) it can be difficult to manage. At Hearing Matters, we offer comprehensive tinnitus assessments which are specifically tailored to your tinnitus symptoms. We will sit down with you during an initial consultation to establish what you aim to achieve through the treatment and how we can best treat to achieve these goals. The tinnitus assessment is carried out by one of our trained Audiologists who will take you through the process:

During this stage your Audiologist will spend time getting to know you, through your lifestyle and medical history. They’ll ask you questions about how your tinnitus is affecting your day-to-day life. By gathering this information, it allows us to get a better idea of what your tinnitus is like and what test to do going forward.

As part of your treatment, you’ll undertake a few audiological tests to allow our Audiologists to get a closer look at your ears. These tests include:

  • Otoscopy - This test allows us to see your ear canal and ear drum.
  • Diagnostic Hearing Test - This is a full standard hearing test where we will check your overall hearing using a technique called pure tone audiometry which plays a series of sounds at different frequencies and pitches.
  • Tympanometry - sometimes a tympanometry might be required to be performed during the testing stage. This test is used to determine the mobility of your eardrum and the middle ear structure.
  • Speech Discrimination Test - This test is designed to focus on your ability to understand speech, in both quiet and noisy environments.
  • Pitch Matching - Pitch Matching allows us to determine which exact frequencies is affecting your tinnitus.

With all the relevant information gathered, your Audiologist will sit down with you to talk about your results and what treatment options will be best suited for your tinnitus. During this stage, if your Audiologist recommends it you might need support from additional healthcare professionals such as GPs or ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) consultants, which they will provide you with details.
